Day 4

Updated: Apr 12, 2019

Topic: Creative writing prompt challenge

Two young men go on a hunting trip and suddenly upon seeing the deer have a memory of Bambi as a young children.

Long dry-strands of grass wiped across the sides of the truck. The truck rumbled down the gravel road with a mechanical roar, causing stones to step out of its path. Danny was with his brother Christian on another hunting trip. Both were coated in cameo-clothing, armed with rifles. There was a slight tinge of pollen in the air as they stopped near a clearing. A shaded section with trampled grass carrying the footwork of deer.

Danny was a tracker, a man of the woods. His nose was like that of a hound, keen. He could touch the floor and feel the sensation of movement, feel the breath of the wind. Christian would observe him with admiration. With the motion of his hand, Danny had a target. They had to quietly stride down the bush, avoiding unnecessary noise. And a deer was spotted. Oblivious to its surroundings, it was chewing on weeds. Its slick back twitched to the touch of wind, its ears were ever alert-darting from side to side.

Danny took out his rifle and stabled it, motioning it towards his prey. And suddenly, while watching the animal a memory faded into existence. Christian felt a hint of nostalgia at watching the unsuspecting deer. A memory of him and his father on a trip, with the mention of a name. "Bambi". The deer's head lifted and Danny's trigger finger had been lifted. In shock, he looked at his brother with rage, but it soon subsided as he saw the wonder in his eyes.

Looking back at the deer Danny soon realized what caught his brothers eye. Beyond sight was a moment crystallized in time. An image of a young deer stood before them, twitching its tail playfully. And without thought, Danny lowered his weapon. And off the deer went, skipping its way into the dense forest-leaving in its wake a memory worth a smile.
